One of my first herb gardens was in the middle of a clay field and it was not simple to get plants to grow right. Soil and sun are probably the biggest considerations when growing herb plants. Without the right amounts of both light and water, your garden won’t grow. If you can get two or 3 of these factors right, you are all set.

Rather than trying to fix the earth issues, I changed my garden plan and learned about rock gardening, which uses rocks and only a thin layer of good dirt.

If you have got a similar situation, you can raise your own rock garden. Some herb plants truly love the rocky craggy soil that you have in areas like this all over the world. If you do not have the rocky soil and want the aesthetic of a rock garden, be sure you have got room for roots to grow and also some good drainage.

When planning your herb garden, be sure that you are choosing plants that can stay compact, because with limited room you don’t want anything taking over. Check your reference books for the right herbs for rock gardens. A good rule of thumb are those with silver or gray leaves. It’s not a hard-and-fast rule, but it should assist in making good choices.

Hen-and-Chicks: {I can’t imagine cutting open a hen or chick and rubbing it on a wart, but this perennial succulent herb, which is also known as St. Patrick’s cabbage, has a long history of healing them.} The leaves of this plant store water for periods of drought. Each one can grow to four inches across and each “hen” can grow many off-shoots or “chicks.” You will enjoy the reddish-pink blooms that can appear atop a 9 inch spike that shoots straight up from the center of each hen in the summer. Before you know it, you will have a colony of plants.

Wild Oregano: Even though this perennial hails from the warm climate of the Mediterranean Sea, it should grow to about 30 inches tall in your herb garden. You can cook with its green oval leaves and be sure to take full, deep breaths of its delightful scent. You’ll also like the purple blossoms, which should come out in August. Although you certainly may eat this variety of oregano, it won’t quite be the same as the Greek oregano you are familiar with from Italian meals.

Marjoram: You can cook with marjoram, but you can use it to landscape your rock garden. It’s a perennial that has a delicate scent with oval gray-green leaves and tiny white flowers. For marjoram to retain its shape and form, keep it clipped back (use the clippings in your Italian dishes) so that it will keep growing well—full sun and the good drainage in your rock garden can help too.

Thyme: Because there are so many varieties of thyme, you will want to be sure you are getting the right variety for your rock garden—below a foot high. Use those with shiny, little leaves that are huddled along the woody stems. As an added benefit, they usually have white or pink flowers. It loves the sandy soils that provide well-drainage and full sunlight. Thyme has a tendency to grow wild, so keep it snipped back to maintain its compact shape.

The contrast between the rocks and the herb plants will dazzle the eyes, without losing any of the other sensations, including aroma and flavor.

Good luck with your herb gardening. Be sure to let me know how your herb garden grows.

You do not have to start your herb garden from seeds, but if you want to get a head start on the season and lengthen the time you’ll have for harvesting your herbs, start from seeds. You can get seeds in a package or use seeds left over from last year.

If you’re interested in starting your garden from seeds keep in mind that some herbs work better than others when you cultivate them at home from seeds.

First, soak your seeds for at least three hours before planting them so that they will have an extra advantage. You can also pre-sprout your herb plants by soaking them, folding them up in a moist paper towel and then sealing them in a freezer bag. Keep the bag at room temperature and out of direct sunlight until you find sprouting seeds when you open the paper towel. Once your seeds have germinated, you are ready to plant them in some rich, moist earth.

I have said it before and I will say it again, read up on your herbs before you get the seeds or begin the germinating process, because that might not be enough. Some kinds of seeds need to be scratched up before they can germinate. Other types will need to be heated up (from natural light, not the microwave, stove or oven) before you cultivate them. Good examples of these include the chili pepper and citronella herbs.

Once your seeds have started the germinating process you should focus on controlling their growing environment. The germinating process can be as little as five days, such as some types of basil, catnip, chives and parsley, or as long as 36 days or more, as in hyssop.

Go purchase one of the soil mixes designed for growing seeds—the better ones usually contain vermiculite and sphagnum moss.

Although there are a number of many fantastic herb plants that you can grow from seeds, here are a couple of my favorites:

Caraway: You can plant caraway straight from the spice jar, which I think is wonderful and easy. Germination won’t take long, and before you know it, you will be planting it in your favorite flower bed or container. Caraway is a popular plant for both German and Indian dishes.

Lavender: There are a number of varieties of lavender to select from. My vote goes to the one called Lady because it grows pretty fast. This fragrant kind of lavender can certainly grow on you.

Nasturtium: These beautiful and edible herb plants are so easy to grow from seeds that you will wonder why you didn’t do it sooner. Soak the seeds overnight before planting for the best outcomes when you plant them in your well-drained earth. You can even cultivate the mature plant inside, and for extra color you can use as a bonus in your salad greens.

Shepherd’s Purse: Spice up your next salad with a little shepherd’s purse, especially if you are using a peppercorn ranch. This herb, which many folks believe is a weed, smells a bit like pepper, but tastes much richer. As an added bonus, the fresh leaves are wonderful for a heavy dose of vitamin C and A. To grow shepherd’s purse, simply sprinkle the seeds on top of the earth, water it and watch it grow.

And those herb plants are just a few. Some other good ones include anise, hyssop, basil, German chamomile, fennel, lemon balm and sorrel.

Good luck with your herb gardening. Be sure to let me know how your herb garden grows.

Picking a few plants you like from your local nursery and undertaking serious garden design are two very different things. A serious green thumb will soak up loads of gardening info and then embark upon an incredible task of redefining his or her personal space. Perennial flower gardening for all seasons involves much forethought. You’ve got to know what plants do well in sun and shade, when each variety will bloom, which plants will be tall and which ones will be short, and what plants work best next to each other.

Naturally, choosing the right plants is a particularly important facet of garden design. One strategy you might use is to choose a theme for your garden. At www.gardenplans.com/beds.html, you can buy garden blueprints and get expert gardening advice for different themes, such as Container Gardening plans, Wildlife Gardens, Getaway Gardens (sun or shade), Island Gardens, Corner Gardens, Food and Flower Gardens, Herb Gardens, Border Gardens, Moonlight Gardens, Late Summer Gardens, Two Story Deck Gardens and more. For just $4.95, you’ll get a full-color garden-scape painting, an overhead plan view, a blueprint planting plan, gardening tips for perennial flowers, a detailed plant list with cold/heat tolerance, a shopping list to bring to the nursery and a two page article on “How to Prepare Great Garden Beds.”

When you’re planning your garden design, be sure you choose plants that play well in the sandbox with one another. You don’t want to put something like ivy in a place where it will consume and cover all your other selections. Be aware of flowers like impatiens, which like to spread out, so plant them far enough apart so they have room to grow. Be mindful to put plants that grow tall in the back and shorter plants in the front, with medium-sized arrangements in the middle to create cohesion. Color and texture are a very personal matter, so you’ll need to look around at different pictures to see what appeals most to you. Before you plan, sketch out an aerial diagram. Leave space for mowing, watering and maintenance.

Thinking about setting up your personal hydroponics garden? There are a variety of methods you can use to implement this strategy. When considering the DIY hydroponics method, you can afford to select between quite simple methods and sophisticated ones. Everything is dependent upon what your crops blossoms on.

What is DIY hydroponics? It’s a gardening procedure that permits you to cultivate flowers, crops, vegetables, and more, all whilst not having land. This is a especially powerful technique for places where it’s too warm, too arid or too bumpy to seed anything. There are lots of gains that hydroponic gardening offers over solid ground based seeding - the most significant ones being that you will no more have to stress about weeding, invasive plants, or pesticides, since all of these can be found throughout the soil.

Instead of solid ground, herbs are immersed with the roots in a highly treated mixture of water and plant nutrients. Still, when it comes to generating the proper habitat for your crops, the smallest issue could cause your efforts to end up all wrong.

Sometimes, DIY hydroponics enables you to take more normal steps in maturing the herbs. For instance, rather than making use of grow lights, natural sunlight is a costless option. Likewise, it’s not necessary that you buy high priced growth containers - lots of DIY hydroponics garden builders get by just fine through the use of jars, buckets, as well as other sorts of typical domestic stuff.

But, in relation to other equipment, it’s best not to pinch when it comes to finances. This is particularly true in the case of purchasing plant nutrient solutions. There are too many companies that provide less costly, low quality solutions that do almost nothing for the herbs in any way. In worse circumstances, they might even affect the plants or cause lesser produce.

Any DIY hydroponics gardener will tell you that superior merchandise are more than worth their expense in the long run. For instance, plenty of stores that are more efficient but costly also provide products that help improve the essence of the crop, the dimensions and colour of blooms, and even growth speeds. In addition there are a number of superior fertilizers that will aid as well.

Also, getting pH lab tests and stabilizer solutions should not be something that you pay for by the most affordable dollar. When it comes to testing your vegetation for extra acidity and treating them, you can’t be too thorough

If you are currently searching for tactics to raise better grass for your lawn, you might have heard that making use of an organic lawn fertilizer can help you greatly.

Homeowners everywhere are now in the market for a thriving, green turf at home. They want to convert their large backyard into an instant playground, a mini-golf practice ground and a place to have picnics on the grass with their children.

Because your lawns are often used by barefoot kids and pets, a critical part of lawn management is selecting the kind of fertilizers you’ll use. Your fertilizer should be organic and natural so that it will not leave horrid and even dangerous residues on your grass. Chemical fertilizers and herbicides may persist on your lawn for a long time, and these can cling to human skin and result in rashes.

With that said, let us talk about some organic lawn fertilizer alternatives for better lawn management.

Shrewd home owners have discovered ways to male beautiful lawns without synthetic fertilizers. First, pick a grass cultivar that is naturally tolerant to diseases, pests and disorders. This variety must be able to adjust to the climate of your district well. Subsequently, choose a soil conditioner that will add to the health of your lawn soil.

Your lawn grass needs minerals such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Because of this, you must select a fertilizer with a good ratio of these necessary nutrients. Mineral deficiency arises when your fertilizer lacks any of these three elements. What is more, inadequate nutrition will make your grass prone to infestation and diseases.

But these minerals in excess can also be dangerous. Applying chemical fertilizers with high quantities of these nutrients may pollute the groundwater.

Ecological safety and cost effectiveness make an organic lawn fertilizer more preferable in comparison to a chemical one. Organic lawn fertilizers don’t contribute to an escalating cycle of chemical use that could cause soil fatigue.

Some examples of organic fertilizers are fish emulsion, compost tea, seaweed, and cow or poultry manure. Natural fertilizers such as these help increase the number of helpful fungi and microbes in the soil

Your indoor plants are going to let you know if something isn’t right. The leaves will fall off, turn brown or some other symptom will manifest itself. The are various causes, some that can be rectified and others that cannot. When you are trying to figure out what is wrong, start with the simplest solution as a starting point.

The most common cause of a sick houseplant is watering, either too much or not enough. If the plant’s leaves are starting too look wilted or are drying up, check the soil and if it is dry add a good amount of water to wet the dirt and leave it moist once the water has run through. If you have over watered a plant, make sure the drainage hole is not clogged and if you have a dish that catches excess water, empty it out to make room for more water to drain out of the pot.

If the edges of the leaves are turning brown and are starting to look dried out it is from too much heat. In this situation it is best to remove the plant from direct sunlight, adjust the temperature inside the home if possible. These symptoms can also show up if there is not enough humidity in the house. As a quick fix you can put a small dish of water near the plant and as it evaporates the plant will soak it up.

When a plant looses its leaves it could be because the roots were damages from over watering, the plant is not getting enough water to support the amount of foliage, or it is too hot. Assess the plant’s environment to begin nursing it back to health and giving it what it needs to get better. If you need more information you ask the experts at your local gardening center.

When you decide to create your own herb garden, the next step is selecting the assortment of herb plants you want. In addition to all the different herbs out there, each herb has several types to choose from—such as basil which has hundreds of varieties.

Each herb variety has its own growing period. Understanding your herb plant’s life cycle will help you make the best decisions. When you go shopping for your herbs, you’ll need to know their life cycle. There are three main types:

Annuals: This kind of flower begins with a seed. They grow, flower and die all in the same growing season. There are a number of nice annual herb plants: cilantro, chervil, basil, borage and dill.

Biennials: This variety of plant can grow for 2 years and can generally bear “fruit” after the first year. Others (like parsley) produce foliage in both years, but go to seed early in the second growing season. Some biennials you should use are angelica, Queen Anne’s lace and chicory.

Perennials: Herbs that tend to persist for more than two growing seasons are called perennials. Whether or not they come back or for how many years they can come back depends on the zone where they grow. Of the many perennials available, some you might enjoy are lemon verbena, rosemary, scented geranium, mints, thyme, yarrow and lady’s mantle.

My favorite herbs are perennials because I only have to buy and plant them once, but I also have fun growing annuals and biennials. Too much cold can harm your perennials, so be cautious. Bringing your perennials in during winter months is a nice way to lengthen their growing cycle.

Here are some nice ways to lengthen the life of your herbs:

A few perennials can need for you to trim them back, dig up the bulb, roots or rhizome, and keep in your garage, basement or cellar over the winter.

Using containers is a great option for those herb plants that you need to over-winter inside your house or garage. If you want to plant these herbs in the ground, a nice trick is to plant them container and all. This makes it a cinch to keep them during winter—just unearth the container at the end of the season.

The best way to get an plenty of flowers from your biennials during the second growing season is to grow them midsummer.

Self-sowers are herb plants that sow their own seeds for the next growing seaon. Some awesome self-sowers include: mustard, borage and catnip.

Clip off faded flowers to lengthen the growing cycle of short-lived annuals. In the right location cutting your annuals back toward the end of summer could cause them to self-seed.

The frost that will result from unexpected cold weather will harm your herbs if you do not protect them by covering them with a towel, sheet or blanket. Herbs that are in containers can be moved under a covered stoop for protection.

My hope for you is that these tips can come in handy when you begin your own herb garden planning. Creating it just as you imagine it can be a struggle. Even I make flubs after all these years, but just remember that you can take out what does not work and try try again!

Most people enjoy a good salad. In fact, eating vegetables daily is highly encouraged. Most green salads have lettuce as the main ingredient. However, many people do not know that despite not having a traditional garden, they can still grow their lettuce using the hydroponic method.

To grow lettuce using this method, you will be required to have the right hydroponic lettuce nutrients in place. These are provided via the hydroponic medium used, to supply the same nutrients that would come from soil. Hydroponic lettuce nutrient solutions can be made at home, or bought already mixed. The latter is the best way to go.

What Hydroponic Lettuce Nutrient Solution Is Made Of

Unlike in traditional gardening, with hydroponic gardening you have to provide the plants with the needed nutrients yourself. This means that you must have the correct hydroponic lettuce nutrients required to get healthy growth. Whatever hydroponic lettuce nutrient solutions are selected should be mixed with water to get just the right balance.

It can be made of sand, gravel, vermiculate and of course, water. To achive optimal growth for your plants, be sure that your solution has the correct pH. The hydroponic lettuce nutrient solution will be made of calcium nitrate and Epsom salt. For each 5 gallons of water, you should have two teaspoons of the calcium nitrate and one teaspoon of the Epsom salts.

Other Conditions To Consider

In order for your lettuce plants to thrive in the medium provided and to properly absorb the hydroponic lettuce nutrients you have provided via the hydroponic lettuce nutrient solution, the temperature must be right. This is generally around 75 degrees Fahrenheit.

Moreover, be sure to provide enough water for your plants. The plants should be watered three times a day to get the best results. You need to make sure that your plants are getting adequate sunlight. For the hydroponic lettuce nutrients to be processed and absorbed properly, this is a must have. If your garden is indoors, you may have to employ the use of grow lights to ensure the same effect.

In additional to the need for hydroponic lettuce nutrients, the water levels and the ph of your solutions should be constant. Moreover, although they shouldn’t cause big problems, be sure to keep an eye out for pests. It will only take a month before you can be able to eat your lettuce. Happy gardening!

As you begin in making your herb garden, learning about indoor and outdoor plants, being aware of their life cycle is key. A plant life cycle diagram can assist you in learning when your specimen may flower, when you can breed your plant, and when several types of plants should be watered or dried out. By researching the life cycle of your plant, you can ensure its longevity. In the case of exotic or high priced specimens, this can help to safeguard your investment.

A good plant life cycle diagram will include a few aspects. First, it will include all stages of a plant’s life, from the creation of the seed to death. If the plant life cycle diagram is missing any phase of the growth of the species you are researching, your chances of successfully tending for or breeding your specimen will be greatly lowered.

The most simple phases of a plant’s life cycle are the seeds phase, germination stage, the seedling stage, the vegetative stage, the flowering phase and the pollination phasee and death. Depending on the type of species that you are gathering data on, this cycle may differ.

Because of what a plant life cycle diagram shows, many diagrams are not linear. Expect a circular chart that shows how seeds are created within the middle of the life span of a specimen. As seeds occur during the flowering or pollination phase of the plant’s life cycle, you should be able to see when the plant seeds. This is particularly needed for those intending to breed species such as mints. Cycles will vary depending on the reproductive cycle of the plant. As many specimens can produce offspring through replication or seeding, not every plant life cycle diagram will be equal. As a basic rule that you should follow, the more exotic or rare a specimen is, the more detailed its diagram will be to show the full cycle of the species.

If you are wanting to breed your specimens, you will want to keep the relevant data on hand. Your main focus in the plant life cycle diagram will be on the pollination, blooming and seeding of your type of specimen. In planting your herb garden, all aspects of this, ranging from required watering changes, temperature changes and condition changes to promote reproduction is the most key.

In making your herb garden, you should be aware of the reproductive cycle of your species, as their upkeep would tend to change during this period of life. If you are properly caring for your species, the reproductive cycle of your specimen will be extended. This usually yields longer and more frequent flowering periods.
