A water garden can be manmade or natural, but two things unite them ? the
use of some type of gardening water feature and the presence of water of
some sort as the focal point. One famous garden of old which utilized a
gardening water feature was the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Another famous
gardening water feature is the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain.
Water gardens have regained prominence on the landscape scene in recent
years, ranging from container water gardens to large outdoor structures.
They are known by many different names such as backyard ponds, water ponds
and aquatic gardens.

A true water garden makes use of different gardening water feature to
compose the whole. The main types of water features are fountains,
waterfalls, ponds and water courses (streams) are common. Not only does a
gardening water feature add to the beauty of any garden, it also adds the
soothing, relaxing music of flowing water. It also provides a great place
to attract wildlife, especially birds whose colors and sounds can only add
to the charm and beauty of any garden.

However, adding a gardening water feature will require additional investment
in equipment as a water filtration system and a pump would be necessary.
These two pieces of equipment are necessary if the delicate balance created
in a water garden is to be maintained. The water pump will ensure that the
water keeps circulating and so provide needed oxygen for the fish and
aquatic plants to live. It also prevents the breeding of mosquitoes which
might use the environment of a gardening water feature to breed. The
filtration plant will help to keep the water clean and safe for aquatic
life, both plant and fish.

One aspect of water features that some persons may not know about is that of
using a gardening water feature to conceal faults in a garden. Professional
landscape artists use gardening water feature all the time to hide
landscaping problems with no one being the wiser.

Nothing else a garden can provide the type of tranquility and balm to the
soul that a bubbling fountain can, except maybe being able to watch the cool
waters of a stream flow merrily on its water. It is partially for these
reasons that a gardening water feature is such a treasure in many outdoor
gardens. In today?s world with so many opting for apartments, small indoor
fountains are allowing homeowners to take their gardening water feature
inside as well. Additionally, there is now the option of powering pumps for
water features by solar energy thereby protecting the environment as well as
reducing electricity costs.

Have you always wanted to take the outdoors inside? Well now you can with indoor water gardening. Not only does water add beauty to a home, it also helps to create a calming environment. The sound of running water has long been considered a source of relaxation. Setting up an indoor water gardening environment inside your home can be cheap and simple with minimal time investment.

To begin designing and setting up your indoor water gardening element inside your home you will need the following:

?	The container to build the garden in
Here you are limited only by your imagination. Just about any container that is non-porous can be used. Some suggestions are: fish tank, plastic buckets, wooden cask, ceramic bowls, glass baking tins.
?	Plants to grow
The choice of aquatic plants suitable for indoor water gardening is varied. Some good choices especially for the beginner include water lettuce, water chestnuts, eelgrass, water ferns and water clover. A mix of floating and rooted aquatic plants can add contrast and style to your water garden.
?	Growing medium
This also varies and is partially dependent on what types of plants you plan on putting into your water garden.

How to care for your indoor water garden

Caring for your indoor water gardening creation is simple and best of all, not time-consuming. Maintaining an indoor water garden is similar to caring for an outdoor one. Dead plants and fish waste (if you decide to go all out and add fish to your creation) must be cleaned out regularly to keep the ?pond? looking good.

You will also need to add water occasionally to replace what is lost due to evaporation. It is important to not just pour water into the container as doing so will do more harm that good. The proper technique for adding water is to pour it slowly, using your hand or the side of the container to break the flow. Also, leave the water standing around for an hour or so to allow it to reach room temperature as cold water can shock the plants in the container.

Using a nutrient degrader will help minimize the build up in your indoor water gardening environment. Controlling algae buildup is necessary for maintaining the health of the plants in the container as well as ensuring that the entire creation looks attractive.

Finally you need to decide on how best to show off your creation. One way is to introduce artificial lighting into the indoor water gardening setting. Alternatively, the container can be placed where adequate, but indirect sunlight can do the trick of highlighting the beauty of the garden.

Why does the water gardener need a water gardening magazine subscription? Aren?t the water gardening magazines available in stores? First, consider what is in a water gardening magazine.

A water gardening magazine can be valuable to any water gardener, beginner and experienced gardener alike. It is full of information on water flowers and foliage. It tells the reader how to select the plants, and how to plant and maintain them. For readers in climates that have cold winters, the magazine even tells them how to keep plants alive through the frosty months. But why get a water gardening magazine subscription?

A water gardening magazine tells the reader what aquatic animals to put in his or her water garden. It explains how fish, snails, fresh water mussels and other creatures benefit the mini-environment that a water garden is. The magazine further explains what the water gardener must do to keep the fish and other creatures alive and healthy. It advises on what they should eat, to keeping predators from eating them. Still, why does the water gardener need a water gardening magazine subscription?

A water gardening magazine tells the water gardening enthusiast how to build a water garden. It presents the gardener with the pros and cons of container gardens, natural ponds, artificial pools, and liner pools and prefabricated pools. The magazine explains everything about pumps and filters. It discusses the differences between stone and brick bordering. It has pictures of prize winning water gardens, beautifully enhanced with ornamentation and statuary. There are photographs of water plants in full bloom, that show the magazine reader what his or her favourite water plants should look like in their prime glory. Again, why does the water gardener need a water gardening magazine subscription?

The water gardening magazine is a forum in which water gardeners from all over the world can get together to share their opinions and experiences and exchange ideas. Through articles and letters they keep in touch with each other and get news of all the developments in the wonderful and unique world of water gardening. So once again the question arises: why does the water gardener need a water gardening magazine subscription?

The answer is simply this. Water gardeners make up a rather unique community following a rather specialized interest. The magazines that cater to their interests are not going to be found on the shelves of the average newsstand or even bookstore. Garden centres will carry the magazines, but quite likely only in limited quantities. Once the garden centre?s supply of copies for a given month is sold out, that?s it! No more until the next issue. Then the water gardener who wasn?t quick enough to get a copy is left out. All that news, all that information, has slipped past. That?s why the water gardener needs a water gardening magazine subscription.

Water gardening, Central Florida is ideally suited for all types of water gardens because of its great tropical climate. The year-round warm climate is especially good for water gardening. Apart from the great weather conditions, the area is also blessed with lots of plants, including natural aquatic flora and animals.

Being able to not worry overly much about winter months when you are into water gardening, Central Florida makes it all possible. However, it is important to know that some areas of Central Florida can and does get pretty cold, even winter frost is not unheard. As such, you need to carefully select the plants you intend to include in your water garden; its best to choose plants that can withstands extreme of heat and cold and still strive.

So far water gardening, Central Florida is a blessing and a curse in relations to the extremes of temperature. However, a little knowledge can go a long way in making your water garden a success throughout the year. Three things to do are:

?	Keep track of the weather conditions over a period of time, you will begin to see a pattern. Central Florida tends to have a very cold weather every three or so years.

?	Get as much information that you can about protecting your plants from frost. One of the best ways to do this, even for outdoor water garden is to keep those plants that do not do well in extreme cold in containers. If you do this, when there is a threat of very cold weather or frost you can always transfer your treasures indoors until it is over.

If the period of cold will be short you can also cover your plants in suitable material to protect them. This is useful if the area of plants that needs to be protected is not too large. If you are unsure what types of material to have on hand for this eventuality, get help at your gardening or hardware store. However, do not use plastic as it is not a great type of insulating material.

?	Select the plants for your water garden carefully.
Choose hardy plants that can be maintained in or out of containers. Some types of plants for water gardening, Central Florida is known for are: palms, some types of ginger, and the vine ? Allamanda.

If you are into water gardening, Central Florida can be good to you and your endeavors, and you are sure to find a club to join of fellow enthusiasts.

That?s why the water gardener needs a water gardening magazine subscription.

Decorative gardens generally feature gardening water accessories like fountains, waterfalls, and ponds. These accessories tend to add charm and beauty to any style water garden.

The style of your water garden will partially determine whether or not you will add one or more feature. Gardening water accessories to be used can be a combination of made and purchased items. However, you can opt to purchase everything to be placed in the water garden. The more creative gardener can however, put their skills to use by making their own fountains from old buckets, ceramic containers or other suitable material.

Because water is the central focus in a water garden, a water source has to be the main feature. Gardening water feature to consider as the main water source for your water garden are:

?	Fountains
?	Ponds
?	Waterfalls
?	Streams

Ponds and streams as features in a water garden are normally in an outside garden, but fountains and waterfalls can be designed for use inside or outside. Ponds and streams in some instances are manmade, but many water gardens use natural ponds or streams on a property. If however, there is no natural water source, you can have fun selecting just the right water feature. Gardening water accessory selection can be great fun. Start by researching the various styles of water gardens such as country, Japanese tea garden, container etcetera; as usual you can start your search online. Once you have narrowed down your choices to around two or three go out looking. Nothing gives a perspective on a water garden like actually seeing it up close and personal.

If you go for an indoor water garden, you will definitely have to use containers, even if the water source is an indoor fountain or other feature. Gardening water accessories are nowadays made especially for indoor use making it easy to set up an indoor water garden.

However, after the design and set up of your water garden, whether inside nor outdoors, you will need to maintain the garden. Manufacturers of gardening accessories have taken this into consideration so even caring for your garden can be relatively simple. Just ask a fellow water garden enthusiast for advice if you are in doubt as to what to do, or get help from a reputable expert in the area.

Mosquitoes love water, making one of their favorite breeding ground a water feature. Gardening water accessories include pumps in the arsenal which helps in mosquito control. Pumps help to circulate the water in a fountain or pond making it difficult for mosquitoes to strive.

Aquatic water gardening involves the planting and maintenance of several different types of plants. The individual plants mentioned in this article are but representative of many species belonging to the various groups. An aquatic water gardening handbook or encyclopedia will provide a more comprehensive list.

Water lilies are the most popular flowers used in aquatic water gardening, though it is certainly possible to have a beautiful water garden without them. Water lilies, which are classified as hardy or tropical, are biologically beneficial to ponds because they provide protection from fish and discourage the growth of algae. Hardy water lilies include the Albatross, which has large white blossoms; the Graziella, with orange-red blossoms; and the Moorei, with soft yellow blossoms. Among the tropical water lilies are those with such self-descriptive names as Blue Beauty, Maroon Beauty and Red Flame.

Deep water aquatics are those plants used in aquatic water gardening that require water to be at least a foot deep. The Sacred Lotus is a popular species, as are Golden Club and the Japanese Pond Lily. Different plants require different depths of water, so be sure to do research before planting.

Submerged plants are important because they are oxygenators, vital to the survival of the fish and other aquatic life in your pond. They also serve as biological filters, removing from the water the salts and wastes upon which algae thrives. S few species even produce surface flowers. Plant your oxygenators a few weeks before you put fish into the pond. Some of the submerged plants most commonly used in aquatic water gardening are Anacharis, Canadian Pondweed and Carolina Water Shield.

Marginal plants are those that grow well in the mud around the pond or in just a few centimeters of water. Many of them are excellent for container water gardening. Among the most popular are Japanese Iris, said to be the most beautiful of irises; Pickerel Weed, which has a lovely blue flower; and Hardy Canna, which produces long stalks of violet flowers.

Peripheral plants are those that serve as a ?frame? for your water garden. A pond without suitable surroundings can look out of place and very artificial. Peripheral plants also hide things that might distract from the beauty of your water garden, like fences or utility buildings. Peripheral plantings should be in keeping with the scale and the atmosphere of the rest of the water garden. Do you want the overall atmosphere to be formal or informal? Evergreens are good for a formal setting. A mix of plants that naturally grow near ponds, such as ferns, sunflowers and bog lilies, are excellent for an informal setting.

One of the biggest challenges in water gardening is keeping the water almost as clear as crystal. Gardening water that is actually crystal clear probably has chemical or mineral pollutants in it. Ideally the water should be slightly brown or green.

When you first fill your pond with a hose, you will have the crystal gardening water you don?t want. Call your local water authority and find out what chemicals are in the municipal water supply. Allowing the crystal gardening water that comes from your tap to stand for a few days will let most of the chlorine dissipate. But you need chemicals to treat chlorine dioxide and chloramines. Pond supply dealers, garden suppliers and pet stores have kits you can use to test your crystal gardening water for unwanted substances. The dealers in those stores can advise you on treatment. Do not, however, use chemicals unless it is absolutely necessary. Do not put your plants and fish into crystal clear gardening water until after you have removed the chloramines.

Once you are rid of the unwanted substances, introduce the plants. They will begin the job of producing the food and oxygen that fish and other aquatic animals will need. They will also prevent the build-up of algae. The water will turn green, but it will clear up in a few weeks as the plants establish themselves. Then you will have the almost crystal gardening water that is the best habitat for your plants and fish. Now you can introduce fish, snails, and whatever other pond dwellers you wish.

It is natural for your water garden to have some algae in it. The mossy algae that grow on the side of the pond are actually beneficial, as they remove toxins from the water. But algae must not be allowed to grow unchecked. If they do, they will starve submerged plants by depriving them of nutrients. This in turn will deprive fish and other aquatic animals of oxygen, and they will die. Algae growth also makes your pond look unattractive.

You can control the growth of algae by putting in water lilies and other floating plants. They consume the nutrients that algae live on, and block out the sunlight algae require for growth. Snails and some fish help by eating algae.

If at all possible, keep algae growth under control by those natural means. You can also skim algae off the surface with a fine mesh net, a brush or a rake. It can also help to install one or two filters. If you must use chemicals, remember that is only a temporary solution, and one that could be harmful to your plants and fish.
