Many people are fearful of rose gardening, because they believe that roses are difficult to grow and require very precise conditioning. But, if you follow four simple rules, rose gardening is really not that tough. Here are the most important rules for rose gardening.

1. Have good soil ? Roses will grow beautifully if planted in the right soil. They need good drainage, so be sure to add peat moss and compost. Soil for rose gardening also requires a pH level of between 6.5 and 6.8, which means that the soil should be slightly acidic. If your soil has too much acid, add lime; if it is not acidic enough, add some sulphur. If you?re unsure of your soil?s pH, contact your local agriculture extension program. In most states, they?ll test your soil for free.
2. Give them water ? If your roses don?t have enough water, they?ll die. On the other hand, watering them too often will rob them of the ability to develop a deep root system. Proper rose gardening requires deep watering a few times a week during the growing season. A fifteen minute watering two to three times a week during the growing season should be just right, depending upon your conditions. Don?t water in the evening, because this can cause powdery mildew to form on your rose plants.
3. Give them sun ? Roses need around six hours of sun each day, to be exact. They will do best if they are protected from the hottest afternoon sun. If you have a spot that gets sun all morning, but has some shade in the afternoon, that?s the perfect spot for your rose garden.
4. Give them air ? This is probably the most common mistake by those who attempt rose gardening and then give up. It is critical that your rose bushes are spaced far enough apart to allow air to circulate between them. Check the spacing requirements of each bush when you purchase.

Roses are prone to a few diseases. Your rose gardening effort will prove more successful if you are aware of the common rose diseases and can prevent or treat them. The most common rose diseases are powdery mildew, rust, black spot. It?s critical to check rose plants for disease before you buy. If you follow watering and spacing instructions, you should have little trouble with these diseases. If, however, you do see symptoms of one of these diseases, prune the infected area; don?t compost the clippings. If this doesn?t solve the problem, a fungicide may be required.

Those are the secrets to rose gardening. It?s really not as difficult as most people think. And, rest assured; no other plant provides quite the beauty to your landscape that roses bring.

One of the biggest concerns that rose gardeners express is in regard to preventing disease. Gardening rose bushes seems to require a fair amount of work in general, so gardeners are often truly concerned about the time commitment that will be required to keep their rose bushes healthy. Preventing and treating disease is one of the most important things you can do to ensure healthy roses.

Gardening rose bushes isn?t really all that difficult if you know what to do. Rose gardening simply requires some attention to detail and enough knowledge to know how to avoid most problems and treat others when they occur. Here are some things you can do to prevent rose disease.

Space them properly ? Proper spacing helps prevent disease. Gardening rose bushes that will flourish requires allowing air to circulate between the plants. Rose plants are far more susceptible to disease if they don?t get proper air ventilation.

Water them in the morning ? Evening watering invites disease. Gardening rose bushes requires morning watering to help ensure that your roses don?t develop powdery mildew ? one of the most common rose diseases. Morning watering ensures that the water will have the opportunity to evaporate as the day warms up, while evening watering invites the growth of fungus.

Keep a check on them ? It is critical to examine your rose plants regularly so that you can watch out for disease. Gardening rose bushes will be much easier if you can catch disease at the first sign.

Remove diseased branches ? As soon as you spot disease branches or leaves, remove them. Removing the diseased branches helps keep the disease from spreading.

Treat the disease- There are many products on the market to treat the most common rose diseases like black spot, powdery mildew and rose mosaic. There are also home remedies that can be just as effective. And, if you?re concerned about protecting the environment by gardening organically, there are plenty of organic alternatives to treating disease in roses.

How do I know if my roses are diseased?

One question many rose gardeners have is about spotting rose diseases. Here are the most common rose diseases and their symptoms so that you can determine which disease you have in order to better prepare to treat it.

Black Spot – The disease is characterized by nearly circular, black spots with fringed margins. Black spot is more common in wet weather and cooler temperatures.

Rust ? Rust shows up first on the undersides of the rose leaves ? and looks like rust. As it spreads it will also show up on the tops of the leaves. Rust develops in temperatures between 65-75? coupled with moist conditions.

Powdery Mildew – This fungus, which can occur in dry weather as well as wet, causes leaves to have a white, talcum-powder-like growth on them.

Rose Mosaic – Rose mosaic is caused by a virus. Its symptoms include splotches of yellow and green on the rose leaves, often in a mosaic pattern.

There are many forms of roses for your rose garden, but none has held its popularity longer than the Rose of Sharon. The Rose of Sharon is a deciduous flowering shrub that grows well in USDA zones 5-9. It is not really a rose, but rather a form of hibiscus. This popular variety is great for the person who is new to gardening. Rose of Sharon is easy to grow and very resistant to pests.

Rose of Sharon bushes can grow 8′-10′ tall and can spread as much as four to six feet, making them a great way to add height to your garden. And, this shrub can bring lots of color to your gardening. Rose of Sharon blooms come in white, red, lavender and light blue. The light and soil requirements of this shrub make it fit well your plan for rose gardening. Rose of Sharon prefers lots of sun and well drained soil, just like actual roses. If Rose of Sharon is not provided with the sun it needs, it may suffer from fungus.

Rose of Sharon is great for your landscape plan because it blooms in late summer, when many other flowers are finished for the year. It can also provide a great backdrop for shorter plants. Because Rose of Sharon can be pruned and shaped, it can also be used in your plan for hedge gardening. Rose of Sharon naturally grows on multiple stems, but you can easily prune it into a single tree like form.

If you live in the Southeastern US, where summers are extremely hot, and where drought is often a big problem in gardening, Rose of Sharon is the plant for you. Rose of Sharon can tolerate extreme heat ? in fact it loves it – and drought once well established.

Rose of Sharon is a delight in the southern summer garden. It remains barren until mid-July; in fact, you may actually think its dead. But, then it gets its light green leaves and sometime in August those beautiful blooms appear. It will keep blooming until the weather cools for fall.

Rose of Sharon is a great plant for attracting hummingbirds and insects to your garden. You can be assured the company of bees and ladybugs when your Rose of Sharon is in bloom. Rose of Sharon is a wonderful addition to your garden, particularly if you live in a climate where many later summer bloomers wither in the heat. Give Rose of Sharon of try for your late summer garden. You?ll have blooms a plenty!

When you?re learning to gardening, you usually want all the help you can get. Any helpful information about gardening ? rose tip information in particular, is very valuable to a new gardener. Here?s some good information I?ve gained from gardening ? there?s a rose tip for each day of the next week. See if these tips can help you grow your most beautiful roses ever.

Day 1 ? Gardening Rose Tip ? Make sure your roses have great soil. Add plenty of compost and peat moss for drainage, and be sure your soil is slightly acidic.

Day 2 ? Gardening Rose Tip ? Roses need regular feeding. If you want to see lots of blooms, feed your roses generously and regularly throughout the growing season. Each rose plant you buy will give you feeding directions. You?ll find that the first feeding of the growing season is especially important, as it gets your roses off to a good start. But, you?ll need to feed all season long if you want the blooms to keep coming.

Day 3 – Gardening Rose Tip ? Look for rose food that has lots of phosphorous. A generous amount of phosphorous in your food will help ensure lots of blooms.

Day 4 ? Gardening Rose Tip ? Spread those roots. When planting a rose bush, take the time to untangle the roots and spread them out. Remove any that are damaged and spread them out in the hole as you plant. This will help your plant develop a good root system.

Day 5 ? Gardening Rose Tip ? Keep the plants tidy. Roses need pruning once a year in the early spring. In addition, you should take care to deadhead spent blooms regularly and remove any leaves that become infected with disease.

Day 6 ? Gardening Rose Tip ? Know the plant before you buy it. If you?re not willing to put lots of time and energy into your rose garden, simply choose rose varieties that are disease resistant and hardy. This will keep your time in the garden to a minimum but still give you beautiful plants.

Day 7 ? Gardening Rose Tip ? Buy the right roses for the area you?re planting. Roses can be used to solve lots of landscape problems. Use climbing roses to cover an unsightly fence. Use ground cover roses to fill in an area where you?ve had difficulty growing grass.

Growing roses is not really that complicated; though it seems that many people are intimidated by the prospect. But, with a little time, effort and attention to detail, you?ll be growing gorgeous roses in no time.

Growing the tuber rose is easy and can add wonderful color and fragrance to your garden. If you?d like to try growing tuber rose for yourself, here are some tips to get you started.

1. Plant tuber roses in soil with good drainage. Peat moss or compost can be added if your soil doesn?t already have adequate drainage for gardening. Tuber rose requires drier than average soil. One sure way to kill them is to let them get water logged.

2. Give your tuber roses full sun ? at least six hours a day.

3. Tuber rose bulbs come in clumps. Plant the whole clump with 2-3 inches of soil above the top. Plant your tuber roses in the spring.

4. Spacing is important in gardening. Tuber roses should be placed 8-10 inches apart.

5. Watering is critical in gardening. Tuber rose should be watered generously after planting and regularly during the growing season.

6. Fertilizer is also a critical element of gardening. Tuber rose requires heavy feeding. During the growth season it?s best to use an 8-8-8 fertilizer.

7. Your tuber roses will bloom in mid to late summer, about 90-120 days after planting. Growing tuber rose is a great way to have lots of cut flowers for bouquets. Just a few stems will fill your home with fragrance.

8. When your tuber roses have finished blooming, it?s best to leave the foliage. The sun will provide nourishment to the bulbs to make sure they flower beautifully again next year.

9. If you live in zone 8 or colder, you should dig your bulbs up after the first frost. Let them air dry for a few days and then store them in paper bags with peat moss until time to replant them next spring. ?

If you prefer to do so, consider container gardening. Tuber rose will do quite well in pots. Plus if you live in a climate that requires you to dig up the tubers each year, planting in pots might actually be an easier way of gardening. Tuber rose still should be moved after the first frost, but this way, you can simply move the tuber roses, pots and all to a warmer spot, such as your garage. Then just move the pots back out into the sunlight when the weather warms up in the spring.

However you choose to grow them, tuber roses are a lovely addition to your garden. Their delicate blooms and heady fragrance make them a favorite for enjoying in the garden and for cutting. If you?ve never grown a tuber rose, make this your year. You?ll certainly be glad that you did.

Rose gardening requires the right tools, and gloves are some of the most important tools a gardener can own. Rose gardening gloves protect your hands from the dirt, which can significantly dry out your skin and ruin your manicure. But, more importantly, rose gardening gloves protect your skin from those nasty thorns.

Because of the thorns you?re trying to avoid, rose gardening gloves must be thick and durable. It?s important that they are made of a material that is difficult to penetrate, so that your hands are thoroughly protected. Because of this, leather is one of the best materials for rose gardening gloves. Though leather gloves can be expensive, they are very durable and will provide excellent protection for your hands.

When choosing rose gardening gloves, check for a close fit. You?ll often find leather gloves designed to fit men?s hands, making them too large for women. And, while it?s not impossible to work on your rose bushes in leather gloves that are too large, it?s not very comfortable to do so, either.

Kid leather gloves that fit your hands like leather driving gloves are a great choice for rose gardening. The close fit will make working feel more natural. However, with a close fit you must be certain that the gloves are indeed thick enough to protect from thorns, since the gloves will be so closely molded to your skin.

Another type of rose gardening gloves that are excellent to use are the type with the rubber cuff. These gloves typically have leather palms, but have a rubber cuff that extends well above your wrist for extra protection. You?ll find that the extra length on these gloves really keep those rose canes from scratching up your arm.

Finally, take a look at synthetic suede gloves for rose gardening. Synthetic suede is just as thick and durable as genuine leather or suede, but it won?t shrink, stretch or crack. These gloves are extremely flexible and will fit your hands every bit as good as a pair of leather gloves. These gloves are slightly more expensive than others you?ll find, but they?ll last forever. And in addition, most extend well up the forearm, so they provide more protection than many traditional rose gardening gloves.

Good, sturdy gardening gloves are a must for any rose gardener. Nothing can take the enjoyment out of your hobby faster than knowing that you?ll be miserable while working in your garden. So, shop around to find the right pair of gardening gloves for you. No rose gardener can afford to be without protection when working in the garden.

Many people are intimidated by growing roses. We often fear that roses will require lots of our time, and perfect growing conditions. And, while it?s true that rose do have a few specific requirements, those requirements are not all that difficult to achieve. You could read books or take classes, but in reality the best way to learn rose gardening is to buy some roses and take a stab!

Before you go shopping for your rose plants, you?ll need to understand the conditions under which roses thrive. Determining the best placement for your rose bushes is key if you want to learn rose gardening. Roses need sunlight ? at least six hours a day to thrive. And, they prefer not to have much of that sunlight in the afternoon when the sun is its hottest. So, find a spot in your garden that gets morning and early afternoon sunlight and you?ve just discovered the best place for your rose garden.

In order to learn rose gardening, you also have to ensure that you have good soil for your roses. Peat moss and compost should be added, and your soil pH should be between 6.5 and 6.8. Go ahead and dig your garden and amend your soil.

The next step you?ll take in your quest to learn rose gardening is to learn how to pick good rose plants. Take some time to consider the purpose of your rose garden. Do you want to have cut flowers? Or, are you more concerned about bringing color to the garden rather than inside the house? Understanding the goal of your rose garden is key to picking the right plants.

Next, you should learn to spot healthy rose plants. Examine the leaves closely on both the top and the bottom. You should look closely for signs of black spot, rust and powdery mildew. Black spot looks just as its name implies; it leaves black spots on the leaves of the plant. Rust is a brown spotting on the leaves and it usually appears on the bottom of the leaves first. Powdery mildew is a white powdery substance on the leaves. If you spot any of these problems, don?t buy the plant! Roses are also very susceptible to aphids; tiny white bugs that can attach themselves to the top or bottom of the leaves.

Now you?re ready to take your plants home and plant them. Take your rose bushes out of the container. Examine the roots, and cut back any that are damaged. Dig your hole wide enough to give the roots plenty of room. Make a cone in the bottom of the hole that will allow you to spread the roots over and around the cone. Place your rose plant in the hole and fill it until the knot just below the plant shoots is covered with an inch of soil. Pack the dirt and then water thoroughly.

After a good watering, build up a little mound of soil around the plant. Be sure to read the spacing requirements on any rose bushes you plant. One of the keys to growing roses is to space the plants far enough apart that air can circulate between them.

In just a few short minutes, you?ve gained many of the tips necessary to learn rose gardening. Now, extend your education by putting these tips into practice!
