What gardener doesn’t sit inside in the winter with the plant catalogue on
their lap while sipping their tea and dreaming of next year’s garden? Well,
it’s just as much fun to get some indoor gardening supplies and have some
winter gardening fun. One can use it to start seedlings or merely raise
indoor plants, but either way with the right indoor gardening supplies, one
doesn’t have to wait for summer to get one’s fingers dirty again.

Let There Be Light

Probably the most important thing to address in indoor gardening is the
level of light. In the winter, the days are shorter and this means less
light. If your house doesn’t have a suitable window facing south to begin
with to capture the most light, you’ll continually have to supplement the
light quotient by moving plants around to capture more sun. Not the optimal
solution. For winter indoor gardening, appropriate light sources are one of
the essential indoor gardening supplies. Some people rely on fluorescent
lights, and others use halogen lights or high intensity discharge lamps.
Some even try to grow them with incandescent light, but that doesn’t work
too well for all plants.

Either way, one should be aware of the light requirements of the indoor
plants one is trying to grow and pick lighting suitable for them.

Water Or Earth

There are a variety of ways you can grow plants inside, some are based on
nutrient rich water-based systems, and others rely on good old Mother Earth.
The type of garden you choose will determine the indoor gardening supplies
you need. Soil-less systems are called hydroponics and are considered
optimal indoor growing systems. They reduce the damage to crops from weeds
and pests. They are a bit more complex to learn, but can be learned fairly
quickly. Indoor gardening supplies usually have an assortment of hydroponics
kits available to the average consumer.

If you are rooting cuttings or growing seeds to transplant outdoor, then
jiffy peat cups or seedling starter kits are available in indoor gardening
supplies. These allow one to plant seeds indoors with a minimum of mess from
soil. They’re compact, easily transported, and the peat pots can be planted
outside pot and all!

Indoor gardening is a rewarding hobby and many people focus on a particular
type of plant. Some like cactuses, others like tropicals, and still other
people grow herbs indoors. Whatever plant you choose, they will have their
own unique growing requirements and optimal environments. Cactuses,
obviously, would want a very dry, hot environment while herbs love
hydroponic setups. So, while choosing your indoor gardening supplies, keep
in mind what plants you will be growing and try to mimic the environment
they naturally grow in for best results.

To buy wholesale gardening supplies, one usually has to be in business and
have a business license, like for a nursery, or a reseller’s license.
Typically, wholesalers do not sell to the general public and reserve their
special prices for those that are in business. But, there are still good
deals out there that can be had at close to or near wholesale prices.

If You’re Thinking Of Going Into Business

Then you want to be able to prove your business is viable and that you
deserve wholesale prices. One can do this by scouting out the yellow pages
for wholesalers or networking with other businesses to find the location of
a good supplier for wholesale gardening supplies. Be prepared to give them
your reseller’s number or prove that you are a business owner.

If You’re Not In Business But Still Want A Good Deal

Try going to places that have large quantities of wholesale goods for the
general public. For instance, Florida has huge nurseries and buying in bulk
can get one close to wholesale prices. So, if you don’t live in Florida but
want wholesale gardening supplies prices, maybe a trip there could be
justified if you knew you’d save a lot of money getting plants for your
gardening hobby.

Grow Your Own Wholesale Plants

Wouldn’t it be great if we could get our own wholesale gardening supplies
for close to free? We sure can. Its called rooting cuttings. You go out and
get a bunch of small cuttings from friends, peoples, business, and root them
in your own garden, tending them little by little until they grow bigger.
Then, you basically got a wholesale plant from a rooting. Obviously,
wholesale gardening supplies would then consist of rooting compound,
misters, and growing kits. But, with a little effort one can grow a large
variety of plants this way.

Wholesale Clubs For The Public

Here’s a way to get close to wholesale prices without being in business:
join a wholesale club. There is an upfront membership fee and variety may be
limited, but price will be close to wholesale. If you’re not picky about the
type of wholesale gardening supplies you want to get, then a wholesale club
can offer some really good deals.

So, when thinking wholesale, don’t assume you have to be in business to get
good deals. If price is the main consideration, then don’t be too picky and
go where the deals are. If you want to specialize and get a large variety of
wholesale goods, then think about starting a business so you too can take
advantage of the world of wholesale.

Okay, so you’ve done the garden hobby for years and now you’re thinking it
might be time to make it a commercial venture. What kind of commercial
gardening supplies might you need? For that, you need to know the answers to
a few questions.

What Do You Plan On Growing And Where?

Do you have a farm already? Are you not planning to buy farmland, but rather
grow indoors? Are you planning on growing mushrooms or orchids? Are you
growing a variety? Or are you planning just to add a greenhouse and start
your commercial venture on a smaller basis? There are a lot of questions
that need to be answered to make your vision a reality. If you already grew
something as a hobby and want to expand that, then the choices become
clearer. However, if you are tempted to expand your choices, there are a few
ways to gather that information.

Information sources for commercial gardening supplies:

* Books and literature
* Internet
* Farmers markets
* Other commercial growers
* Cooperatives

Books

There are a number of published works from square-foot gardening to
hydroponics that are helpful in deciding what commercial growing method is
right for you. If you are thinking of growing something you’ve never tried
before, then a little armchair gardening might be in order.

Internet

The US Department of Agriculture has many different sections on their
website for farmers or hobbyists. There’s an entire section on organic
gardening and sustainable agriculture. In addition, many websites selling
commercial gardening supplies will give the appropriate usage and provide
pictures online.

Farmers Markets

Nothing beats getting the information straight from the horse’s mouth. If
you go to your local farmer’s market, you can get information straight from
the growers. Tell them you are interested in doing your own setup and you
want to know what they think is best to use in your area. They may even be
able to tell you where you can locate the commercial gardening supplies
locally and which suppliers have the best deals.

Other Commercial Growers

These people are a lot less apt to give you information on how to get you
into a commercial operation. After all, they see you as competition. But,
you can generally ask them about the differences between greenhouses and
different types of growing systems and they may be eager to show off what
they know.

Cooperatives

One can join agricultural supply cooperatives that would be a way to reduce
costs and gather information from other members. In the United States, the
Southern States cooperative provides fertilizers and farming commercial
gardening supplies, among many other things.

Gardening supplies dealers sell to businesses and hobbyists around the
country. Some sell to gardening clubs at a discount, others only to
businesses with appropriate reseller’s licenses. Many gardening supplies
dealers are independent gardening centers and use word of mouth to
advertise. If you are looking for the gardening supplies dealers in your
areas, scout all your options to make an informed decision.

The Phone Book

To locate the local gardening centers in your areas, all one has to do is
get a copy of the phone book. The yellow pages will typically have a
gardener’s section that is useful to see who is in your area.

The Internet

The Internet has become one of the most valuable information resources ever.
By typing into a search engine the type of gardening supplies dealer you are
looking for and your city name, it can spot a dealer online in seconds. The
nice feature about the Internet is that once you have a postal address, you
can use Mapquest to find out just exactly how far away the gardening center
is from you.

Gardening Clubs And Programs

Whether you’ve joined a master gardener program or just a local gardening
club, these are the best places to get information on not just the location,
but the quality and price of different dealers in the area. Gardeners love
to share their expertise and that includes knowing where to go to get that
exotic plant specimen you’ve been dying to have.

Garden Shows

Garden shows attract gardening supplies dealers from all over the country,
so they won’t just be local dealers. However, a garden show is good to
attend to see the variety of dealers and their offerings all in one spot.
While there, don’t forget to pick the brains of the salespeople and pick up
some literature. This can be used to compare a local supplier with one that
is not. You may end up finding the better deal is not a local supplier!

Television Garden Shows

Did you see a garden show that inspired you to try something new? Many of
these shows will give the credits for suppliers they used either at the end
of a segment or on their website. Next time you’re watching a show you like
and want to know where the gardening supplies dealers are they used, take
note with a pen and pencil. The show will give out this information either
at the end of a segment, at the end of the show, or direct the viewer to
their website in a specific area.

So, your hobby has become an obsession and now you’re thinking of becoming a
master gardener, but what does this mean? Many people decide to take their
love of gardening to the next level and join master gardener programs
offered at universities and extension agents across the United States and
Canada. These programs offer valuable training and information in exchange
for volunteer hours. So, what kind of master gardener gardening supplies
might you need for such a program? It will range from supplies for teaching
to gardening.

Some of the activities one might be asked to do are:

* Give lectures
* Attend or host exhibits
* Do demonstrations or community projects
* Pass information on to students, seniors or others

In addition to these volunteer activities, one will get to take part in
training courses taught by the extension agent or university. Training can
range from lawns, organic and vegetable gardening to different techniques
against weeds and pests. In the end, one may end up with a large number of
master gardener gardening supplies in the tool shed because of the depth and
breadth of material covered.

Master Gardener Gardening Supplies For Teaching

Obviously, exhibits require some creativity and planning. There are paper
costs, and photocopying. If planting a community project one will have to
locate and buy sufficient plant material. In addition, transport of the
plant material and equipment becomes important.

Today’s master gardener may even want a computer and some software to be
able to instruct students in a classroom setting using PowerPoint or
landscaping software. Being a master gardener isn’t just about being out in
the dirt and the sunshine but carries a commitment to pass along the
information to other people in the community.

Master Gardener Gardening Supplies For The Garden

One can be pretty sure of spending a lot of time in the garden as a master
gardener. So, comfortable garden shoes, kneepads, gloves and hats are
essential. Sunscreen and bug spray will also be important as the season
progresses. Supplies for projects like plants, soil, fertilizers, pesticides
and mulching will need to be bought at different times. A master gardener
eventually even adds a suitable car with plenty of storage capacity for
transporting these materials from site to site. This can be a pickup truck
with a large bed.

The standard gardening tools of shovels, picks, spades, hoes, and rakes will
end up being bought, along with power garden tools to ease the efforts in
the garden. If more specialized work is expected, like planting bulbs, a
bulb planter may end up being an essential tool in a master gardener’s tool
shed. It all depends on what area they are working with and what projects
they are doing. It can be certain, however, that a master gardener will be
involved in a variety of projects and need a large assortment of master
gardener gardening supplies.

Do you consider yourself a beginning gardener or master gardener? Do your
tastes run to Japanese or cottage gardens? Maybe you just want a spectacular
vegetable garden. Or maybe you’re interested in indoor gardening or a
space-age hydroponics setup. Whatever type of gardener you are, gardening
supplies online make it easy to search and identify websites that provide
good quality supplies at bargain prices without even leaving your home.

Advantages To Gardening Supplies Online

* A large variety for all gardeners
* Can help locate supplies that are hard to find locally
* There are no gas charges for shopping online
* Some sites give a discount on shipping with bulk orders
* You can shop any time of season
* You can find bargains off-season
* You can get reading material on different supplies before you buy
* It’s just plain fun!

Diverse And Unique Supplies

There’s no question about it. Going online provides great advantages if your
niche is something your local nurseries cannot keep well stocked in their
own inventories. Gardening supplies online offer a gardener the chance to
wander into areas they might not have tried before. Maybe growing orchids
sounds tempting? Get on the WWW and check out what gardening supplies online
exist to help one become an orchid farmer.

Convenience And Savings

Gardening supplies online do not require you to hop in your car and waste
valuable gas monies trying to find a nursery that can help you grow a
Japanese garden. By simply going online, one has an assortment of growers
and kits specializing in this area that are more than willing to ship
materials to your location. Sometimes, the shipping is even discounted if
you buy in bulk! And, there is no reason one can’t order out-of-season and
keep the materials in a garage or greenhouse waiting the next year’s season.

It’s Informational And Fun!

When was the last time you went into a gardening center and found someone
who had time to talk to you while a myriad of customers all clamored to buy
their spring gardens? Anyone who has ever gone during the season knows that
gardening centers are very busy places! Even if you want to grow a variety
or garden theme that is locally available, there’s no reason one can’t get a
little heads-up by visiting different websites for gardening supplies
online. Most websites don’t just offer a series of products and prices, but
often they also include web content on how to properly use the product and
what one can expect from it.

Going online also allows one to imagine a garden by browsing pictures
online. If you want to do a hydroponics garden, maybe a few pictures might
enlighten you on the possibilities. Planting a blue-colored garden may seem
impossible until we see pictures of them on the web. This is where gardening
supplies online really excel! The websites provide valuable information and
inspire the gardener to try new things – a fun and exciting hobby!

It’s really rather funny that we now see organic gardening as a new trend.
In reality, before commercialized farms, most gardening was organic. It was
only in the industrial age that the idea of chemical fertilizers and
pesticides became more the norm. However, it is happening, organic gardening
supplies are getting more and more attention as consumers strive to do
things more naturally and with less chemicals.

Organic gardening relies on healthy soil and good weed and pest control
using natural means. Organic soil tends to be quite rich and many organic
gardeners have their own compost bins so they can enrich the soil they have
naturally. Many garden supply stores sell compost bins and barrels. They
also sell food scrap bins for the kitchen to enrich the organic compost
heap. Good soil is the key to organic gardening and you can only get there
by either buying good organic compost or making your own with a compost bin.

If you’re not sure what your soil needs, then the soil needs to be tested.
There are soil kits to determine the composition of your soil. Buying one
and then amending the soil with needed materials like kelp or granite might
make it more bountiful with less effort.

Other ways to pamper your soil can be had cheaply from local farms: sawdust,
manure, or wood chips, or pine needles The wood chips and pine straw make
great mulch for different types of garden beds. Pine needles are good for
acid-loving plants. Laying out just 3 inches of mulch can help reduce weeds
and retain moisture. Not to mention, it looks quite nice.

Most of the work in an organic garden is done with the good old organic
gardening supplies of shovels, hoes, and even household items like soap and
vinegar. Modern day rototillers can be used to prepare the soil on a larger
scale.

Pest management is also important. Most organic gardeners tend to plant a
large variety of plants to keep a particular pest from being attracted and
monopolizing the garden. Organic gardening supplies focus on buy many
varieties of plant in their most healthy state. If they are diseased, they
just bring their problems to your garden.

If aphids appear, a spray of soapy water is used. Other kitchen concoctions
are garlic and hot pepper sprays to keep pests away. Some people go out and
buy Neem products, a tree that grows in India. Neem has the ability to deter
pest infestation on plants and people make a solution of Neem seed oil and
water to spray their plants and keep them healthy.

Weed control can be a full-time job in warmer climates. Using mulches keeps
the weeds down, but some beds need to be hoed regularly. Another solution of
vinegar and water can help kill stray weeds in sidewalks as well.

Whatever you choose, the main idea in organic gardening is to get your soil
in shape and cut down on weed and pests in the garden the natural way.
Buying organic gardening supplies is a way to help the earth remain fertile
and plentiful for years to come.

When the East meets West, instead of fusion we sometimes get confusion. But,
once that moment is passed a new awareness creeps in and the joys of a new
culture spread before us. So, it is with Japanese gardens. The ideal
Japanese garden is a statement of simplicity and form, often requiring a
complete change of mindset to establish, but later finding it to be simpler
to maintain and appreciate. Japanese gardening supplies will include many
materials we commonly don’t think are gardening supplies, because of the
attention to detail, simplicity, and form.

Rocks Are Garden Ornaments?

While a Western garden may appreciate a big boulder as a central point of a
garden, the Japanese garden relies on more subtle Japanese gardening
supplies. Often, the Japanese use flat stones or variously shaped boulders
with lichens and patinas to build a garden structure with beauty. In
addition, the use of sand in a Japanese garden is used with curved rake
patterns to represent the ocean. But, sand is hardly what we think of as a
surface material for a garden. In Japan, it is used for just that.

So, you may end up finding yourself at a rock quarry more than a home and
garden store to find just the perfect Japanese gardening supplies.

Water

Since Japan is an island nation, they do have many beautiful water gardens.
Since the Japanese link to accentuate the natural world, things like
minerals, water, sand, and plants are usually the focal points of the
garden. A small pond here, or trickling waterfall there, and this element
can take one into a meditative state all by itself. If one can’t build a
pond, bamboo containers filled with water plants and a pump can help bring
that element into the Japanese themed garden.

Sculptures

One of the ways Japanese show their love of form is through artfully
sculpturing the terrain into artificial hills. Placing mounds of earth here
and there is a lovely way to bring a natural beauty to a backyard garden.

However, there are many Japanese gardening supplies that consist of tiny
pagodas, lanterns, and screens. None of these should detract from the
overall serenity or naturalness of the garden, though, to maintain its
Zen-like state of peace. In Japan, gardens are meant to merge the spiritual
with the physical, and can be still be done by picking Japanese gardening
supplies that bring these aspects into the garden.

Trees and plants

Most Japanese trees and plants for the garden are quite understated by
Western standards. Japanese maple is a favorite of Westerners because of its
showy bronze and red leaves. Bonsai can seem tiny and plain by Western
standards, but are perfectly at home in a Japanese garden. Don’t limit your
choices to bushes and trees. Add mosses and creepers to your Japanese
gardening supplies to add naturalness to stone steps or stone sculpture.

We love to garden but pots, plants, and tools can add up to a hefty penny.
We may have a dream to fill our huge lot with all manner of vegetables,
fruits, and flowers, but don’t have the equipment or the plant stock to do
it. Knowing where to find discount gardening supplies helps us to establish
our gardens more quickly, and gives us the joy of knowing we can still
remain in budget. The trick is knowing when, where, and how to find
discounts. Sometimes, in the height of the planting season, we may wonder if
discounts even exist. They sure do, but you have to plan ahead.

When

By far, the best time to get discount gardening supplies is after the season
is over! Many home and garden stores will discount plants and supplies to
make room for next year’s merchandise. Buying perennials near the end of the
season is a good way to build up the garden by planting them with enough
time to get them to develop roots before the winter sets in. The aim is not
to necessarily see them flower this year, but to build up your garden with
for next year with discount gardening supplies.

Where

While many retailers are also making way for winter, online retailers will
be gathering discount wares and slashing prices as well during the fall
season. Here one can find tools, decorative items for the garden that can be
bought now at savings and stored for next year’s season. Don’t forget to
shop online for discount gardening supplies.

Discounts In Season

Some people like to go to the sources where nurseries are growing in large
quantities. These nurseries can offer discounts for big orders on plant
stock or sometimes they are simply cheaper because they are grown en masse
and have more stock available.

Are you headed to Florida for a vacation? They sell tropical plants there
that are more expensive elsewhere in the country. A little private shipping
on your part, and you can have some nice indoor additions to your indoor
garden.

Join A Garden Club

A garden club will be able to trade plants and knowledge amongst members.
Some of this knowledge is where the best discounts are located. Many people
in garden clubs know where the best sales are.

Discount warehouses and Stores

By joining a discount warehouse, one can sometimes find wonderful discount
gardening supplies. If it is not a discount store but a membership
warehouse, it will mean signing up and paying a membership fee. How often
you buy and how much will determine how much you eventually save. But, these
are also good options for discount gardening supplies.

When we have big dreams for our gardens, it helps to know that there are
places we can get good discounts to help us make our dreams come true. By
understanding where, when, and how to get a good discount it will make
buying those gardening supplies fun and thrifty too!
